QUETTA: Customs officials on Tuesday seized a huge quantity of fine quality hashish from a trailer coming from the Chaman border at Baleli checkpost near Quetta.
Collector of Customs Preventive Dr Iftikhar Ahmed told a press conference that the officials intercepted the trailer at the checkpost and during its search found 2,000 kilograms of fine quality hashish hidden in the vehicle.
He said after receiving a tip-off about a bid for smuggling of hashish from the border Additional Collector Jameel Baloch issued high an alert at the Baleli checkpost where officials, headed by Customs Superintendent Saleem Agha, started strict checking of vehicles.
He said hashish was packed and concealed in special cavities designed for the purpose of smuggling.
He said no one could be arrested as people travelling with the trailer made their good escape taking the benefit of darkness while the Customs officials were busy in searching the long-body vehicle.
Mr Ahmed claimed that it was the biggest narcotics case in the history of the Quetta Customs. The value of the seized drug has been estimated around Rs500 million in the international market.
A case has been registered against unidentified smugglers and further investigation in the case was under way.
Mr Ahmed appreciated the performance of the Customs officials for foiling the attempt to smuggle hashish in such a large quantity.
