KARACHI: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader Nisar Khuhro on Friday was elected unopposed as a member of the Senate on a seat fell vacant after resignation of former Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Faisal Vawda.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) last month announced the schedule for election on the Senate seat which fell vacant after resignation of the former PTI leader.

According to the schedule issued by the ECP, polling for the vacant Senate seat was supposed to happen on January 2s in the Sindh Assembly building.

However, on Friday, Aajiz Dhamra and Sarfaraz Rajpar, who are Mr Khuhro`s covering candidate, withdrew their nominations paving the way for the victory of the PPP`s Sindh president.

Talking to reporters at the ECP, Mr Khuhro thanked his party leadership for posing trust in him.

Responding to a question about the Karachi local government elections, he said that the PPP had won majority seats in Karachi, but it had yet to make any decision regarding the city mayor.

`There are several formalities before the mayoral election. The KMC [Karachi Metropolitan Corporation] would take time to get them completed and then the members would take theoath. After all these formalities come the elections of the mayor and deputy.

So it would be too early to make any decision on this issue,` he said.

Mr Vawda had resigned from the Senate seat on Dec 28.

The ECP on Dec 8 restored Mr Vawda as a Senator and withdrew the victory notification of Senator Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, who had won the seat following Mr Vawda`s disqualification overhiding his US citizenship.

The ECP, in line with the orders of the Supreme Court, withdrew the notification which de-seated Mr Vawda from the Senate seat and restored the notification dated March 10, 2021, declaring him a returned candidate.

Mr Vawda, however, had resigned from the Senate seat under a commitment given to the Supreme Court paving way for the new election.
