Protest against death in `custody`

B A H AW A L P U R : Protesters blocked Channigoth-Liquatpur Road on Friday, placing the body of a man, Allah Wasaya, on the road who was allegedly tortured to death by the Channigoth police.

The family members said the deceased was picked up by the police on Thursday, and later the body was thrown in the open before dawn.

The police denied its role.

A press release issued by the police said the police recovered the body of Allah Wasya from village Lalloo Naich.

According to the preliminary investigation, Wasaya had a land dispute with his neighbours and that he was not taken into custody by police.

The police were collectingforensicevidence.

The police shifted the body to a nearby healthcentre for a postmortem examination.

The police said that if evidence emerged against police officials, a strict action would be taken, and in this regard, a probe under the Ahmedpur East assistant superintendent of police hadbeenlaunched.

This is the second incident in a week in which police are accused of killing a man.

Earlier, in the Bahawalpur Civil Lines` police custody, a man was allegedly tortured to death. Seven police officials were booked on murder charges in the case.

RPO: Regional Police Officer (RPO) Munir Ahmed Zia Rao handed over the keys of nine cars, 59 motorcycles and cash to their owners.

The police claimed that stolen vehicles and valuables were recovered from eight gangs in 2022.

The Regional Police Officer also held an open court.
