WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump`s remarks after taking office sent shockwaves around the world as he made a slew of announcements that included his plans to deport millions of undocumented migrants, withdraw from the Paris climate accord, end birthright citizenship, and do away with diversity measures with regard to gender.
In his first speech after being sworn in, the 47th US president pronounced the start of a `golden age` Trump portrayed himself as a national savior chosen by God.
The inauguration completes a triumphant comeback for a political disruptor who survived two impeachment trials, a felony conviction, two assassination attempts and an indictment for attempting to overturn his 2020 election loss.
Trump will be the first felon to occupy the White House and he intends to sign a raft of executive actions in his first hours as president, incoming White House officials said on Monday, including 10 focused on border security and immigration, his top priority.
`First, I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will be immedi-ately halted and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,` Trump said in the US Capitol, where his inauguration was held indoors due to chilly weather.`I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country,` he said.
He is also expected to resume a policy forcing asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their US court dates, officials told reporters.
But Trump will not immediately impose new tariffs on Monday, instead directing federal agencies to evaluate trade relationships with Canada, China`I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country,` he said.
He is also expected to resume a policy forcing asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their US court dates, officials told reporters.
But Trump will not immediately impose new tariffs on Monday, instead directing federal agencies to evaluate trade relationships with Canada, Chinaand Mexico, a Trump official said, an unexpected development that unleashed a broad slide in the US dollar and a rally in global stock markets on a day when US financial markets are closed.
`I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families,` he said.
`Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,` he said.
`We are establishing the external revenue service to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury, coming from foreign source,` Trump said inhisinauguraladdress.
`I will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life... As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female,` he said.
`We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars` Trump said.
`We`re going to end asylum,` White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly told reporters, and create `an immediate removal process without possibility of asylum. We are then going to end birthright citizenship.
`We`re going to... reinstate `Remain in Mexico` and build the wall,` he said.
The notion of birthright citizenship is enshrined in the US Constitution, which grants anyone born on US soil the right to an American passport.
Trump will also restore the federal death penalty, which Biden had suspended, and require that official US documents such as passports reflect citizens` gender as assigned at birth, incoming administration officials told reporters. Trump also said would take back the Panama Canal, but gave no further details. The Trump administration also announced its intention to withdraw from the Paris climate accord for a second time, marking a defiant rejection of global efforts to combat planetary warming as catastrophic weather events intensify worldwide.
The decision would place the US alongside Iran, Libya and Yemen as the only countries in the world outside the 2015 pact, in which governments agreed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
Trump also withdrew the US from the Paris deal during his first term in office, though the process took years and was immediately reversed by the Biden presidency in 2021.
The withdrawal this time around is likely to take less time as little as a year because Trump will not be bound by the deals initial three-year commitment.-Agencies
