Priority areas for IMC

2016-03-21
T HE newly-created Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) has inherited a number of civic problems previously handled by the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

While setting priorities, the IMC is expected to choose those areas first where the judiciary has some stake in the context of civic problems, for example the nonconforming use of residential houses, the erection ofbarriers on roads/streetsin the name of security, and the unabated swelling of slum areas.

The IMC needs to go by the courts` orders/directives and take necessary steps in such cases. A fool-proof and transparent policy may also be laid down to deal with such matters in future.

Safe drinking water and sanitation are the other important areas where citizens harbour a lot of discontentment. Complaintsof either no water supply altogether, or the supply of contaminated water, are very common and need to be addressed as early as possible.

Similarly, sanitation services carried out manually in each sector need to be accelerated and made more regular and effective, either by hiring additional staff or by engaging existing staff for more time on a shift basis by offering them adequate incentives. Apart from residential areas, stinking markets like Aabpara should be at the top of the IMC reform agenda.

The deplorable condition of parks and playgrounds is another area which deserves early attention. Urgent steps need to be taken for upgradation.

The provision of fences, lights, benches, toilets and tuck-shops should be a standard feature.

While taking the oath, the IMC mayor was fairly enthusiastic about making Islamabad more beautiful. In that context, attention is drawn to the broken footpaths, non-functional streetlights and weedy streets, particularly around the F. G.

Polyclinic in the G-6 sector.

The non-maintenance of government quarters by the CDA is another cause of resentment. The funds available for the purpose are reportedly spenton the houses of blue-eyed people.

The mayor`s office is requested to look into the matter and direct the directorate concerned tocarry outrepairs.
