Protests cost dearly

2016-04-21
PAKISTAN has already lost much owing to the prolonged and incapacitating demonstrations and sit-ins. It may lose even more in times to come if people at the helm of this country do not mend their ways. In money terms, the country has suffered losses to the tune of billions owing to chaotic and violent protests.

The freedom of expression that our constitution guarantees to its citizens must not hurt the country`s well-being. Political demonstrations organised by various groups have gravely affected the country`s economy and seriously threatened its security.

The demonstrations have also tarnished the country`s image in the world. In economic terms, they have affected the flow of foreign investment, thus retarding economic growth and drastically reducing opportunities for employment.

Above all, the $45bn Chinese investment stands threatened, owing to the escalating political instability. The latest Panama scandalcouldfurtheraggravate the already uncertain political and socioeconomic situation.

All political parties must make sincere endeavours toappreciate the gravity ofthe situation. They should rise above self and make concerted efforts to bring progress and stability to Pakistan. They must realise thattheirvestedinterestshave already caused colossal damage to this country.
