Railway police to have digital connectivity

LAHORE: All49railway police stations across the country are set to be connected online with each other and the Lahore based central police office by June 10.

The Pakistan Railways Police (PR-Police) administration has issued necessary instructions to complete the task after which the buildings of all police stations would also be reconstructed under modern architecture, Dawn has learnt.

An official source in the PR-police told Dawn on Tuesday that the buildings of all police stations would be reconstructed since the existing ones are in dilapidated condition.

The Pakistan Railways` field formations is divided into eight divisions--Lahore, Lahore Mughalpura Workshop Rawalpindi,Peshawar,Quetta,Karachi, Sukkar and Multan. Lahore division has total nine police stations, followed by one in Lahore Mughalpura, four in Rawalpindi, six in Peshawar, eight in Karachi, nine in Multan, and six each in Quetta and Sukkar.

The online system`s salient featuresinclude digitization of crime record, registration of FIR, human resource management information, access to crime data and criminal record and e-policing, etc. In addition, the railway police are also being imparted basic training to deal with terrorism on the pattern of counter terrorism department.

`The railway police are the poorest and unprivileged department of the PR in particular and the country in general.

And this all was felt after the terrorists` attack on Jafar Express in recent months,` the official said.

On the other hand, the PR Police IG Rai Tahir has directed all SPs to change their behavior and make it compatible to the current needs. He also sought making the PR police, including police stations online by June 10.

`Servers have been installed at the PR Police Headquarters in Lahore and soon this would be connected with the servers of all police stations,` the IG said while presiding over a meeting here on Tuesday.

He urged SPs to focus on getting the criminals punished by the courts. He also directed the SPs to directly supervise the cases related to heinous crimes.
