THERE are often long speeches on the importance of education and lagging behind in producing brilliant minds by those who are supposed to promote education. But things at Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, Karachi, paint a gloomy picture of education affairs.
I am a lecturer at the Mass Communication Department at the Federal Urdu University in Karachi. Despite the faculty`s dedication to teaching and academic development, teachers are forced to put up with serious institutional neglect.
Currently, we have not received our salaries for the last two months, our house ceiling allowance has been pending for eight months, and medical facilities remain unavailable.
In addition, my rightful MPhil allowance has been unjustly withheld. When I approached the registrar, I was initially questioned rather dismissively on how my MPhil benefits the university. I formally responded, highlighting its academic and institutional advantages, but I was later told verbally that the allowance remains on hold.
There has been no further explanation at all; valid or even invalid. This whole incident reflects a broader pattern of disregardforthe teachingstaff, and raises serious concerns about how our educators are treated in public universities.
