LGH starts BRCA test for breast cancer

LAHORE: The Central Research Lab of the Postgraduate Medical Institute, Lahore General Hospital (LGH), has crossed another milestone bymakingpossibleBRCA-1 for breast cancer diagnosis.

The LGH which has become the first public sector hospital in the country to conduct advanced breast cancer diagnosis and genetic identification-based testing using the lab especially by imported kits.

This was stated by Ameeruddin Medical College Principal Prof Dr Al-Fareed Zafar while talking to media representatives on Saturday.

Research Lab Director Central PhD Dr Ghazala Rubi, MS Dr Frayad Hussain, Dr Laila Shafiq and Dr Abdul Aziz were also present.

Prof Zafar said the big-gest benefit of BRCA-1 would be that such women as had a family history of breast cancer and were genetically at risk of developing the chronic disease would be able to get an awareness of the possibility of developing breast cancer ornot through the recognition of genes from the above mentioned advanced test.

He said the test compared normal genes with affected ones to determine whether or not the disease was present, identifying not just one gene butapanelofseventypes of genes.

The PGMI principal said the women should not hesitate to contact doctors timely in case of pain or slight lumpiness as the breast cancer could be prevented immediately.
