Safari`s tiger enclave set for revamp

LAHORE: The Lahore Zoo Safari stands as one of the city`s vibrant destinations for captive breeding endeavors. While famous for its lion and tiger safaris, the tiger safari has remained inactive for the past few years, a situation set to change with impending renovations, according to officials who spoke to Dawn.

Presently, the Lahore Zoo Safari is home to seven tigers, although they are often confined to their enclosures instead of roaming the safari grounds.

Sources within the Punjab Wildlife Department informed Dawn that spatial constraints and technicalissues have hindered the safari`s operation.

Responding to growing publicdemand for its reopening, plans are in motion to revamp the safari.

The reimagined tiger safari will include new enclosures and a more suitable environment for the tigers.

It is worth noting that the Lion Safari continues to operate, with visitors flocking to the attraction, especially on weekends.

Lahore Zoo Safari Assistant Director Ghulam Rasool affirmed that the tiger safari overhaul aims to create a more visitor-friendly and tiger-centric experience. The previous set-up faced technical challenges that will be addressed through the comprehensive renovation.

Mr Rasool said recent births within the Safari, including a new member in the Zebra family, a birth in the Blue Bull family, and a birth among the monkeys.Also, 12 deer have been relocated from Lahore Zoo to Lahore Zoo Safari, featuring two pairs of spotted deer and four pairs of Hog Deer.

The newly established pheasantry of chakkors (partridges) has garnered substantial interest, with plans to expand this feature in the near future, Mr Rasool added.

Officials from the Punjab Wildlife Department said that not only is the tiger safari being improved, but there are also intentions to improve the Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala zoos.

These improvements will encompass additional facilities for visitors.

An ambitious inter-zoo exchange programme is set to transport various animals to these locations.
