Villagers take to streets for flood relief

GUJRANWALA: The flood-affected people of Kamoki tehsil blocked on Saturday GT Road in protest against non-provision of any relief and demanded compensation on a priority basis.
The protesters mostly villagers led by Ahmad Ali, Mehmood Ahmad and Shadi Khan gathered on GT Road in front of the municipal office and threw traffic out of gear.
They burnt tyres and chanted slogan against the government.
They alleged that ruling party members of parliament former federal minister Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan and MNA Rana Umer Nazir got breached Nullah Deg to save their agricultural lands while Gunaur, Kuri Kot, Shamir, Nangal Dona Singh, Chakian, Hayatian, Rana Shadiwala and Seich villages were devastated by the flood.
They said vegetables, corn crops and their animals were swept away by the flooded Nullah Deg. The protesters said villages were still under water but no government organisation or elected representative came to them for help.
This correspondent learnt that when Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan and MNA Rana Umer Nazir went there for assurance, the protesters refused to listen to them and chanted slogans `Go Nawaz Go.Later, the protesters dispersed when another member of ruling party, Rana Shamshad Ahmad, assured them that committees had been formed and that they would be compensated on Sept 27.
Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan and Rana Umer Nazir denied the allegations that Nullah Deg was breached to save their agricultural lands.
FOUND DEAD: A youth on Saturday was found hanging from a tree near Income Tax Office on GT Road near Upper Chenab Canal while police recovered the body and shifted it to DHQ hospital for autopsy.
Police said an identity card was found on the body. The deceased was identified as Muhammad Irfan, 25, of Raiwind. They said it seemed the youth committed suicide as the body did not bear torture marks.
INJURES WIFE: A man stabbed and injured his wife and father-in-law over divorce issue on Khiali Road on Saturday.
Reports said `Z` had a quarrel with her husband Shoaib over some domestic issue and got divorce. On Saturday, the suspect attacked her with a knife. When his father-in-law Hanif came to rescue her, he also attacked him with the knife. The injured were admitted to hospital where the condition of `Z` was said to be critical.
