U.N. demands cease-fire

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council today [Sept 20 J `demanded` a cease-fire between India and Pakistan to take effect on Wednesday Sept 22 at 12 noon WPST. It further called upon the two governments to `withdraw all armed personnel back to the positions held by them before Aug 5, 1965` After a day of hectic consultations and intense lobbying, the Security Council at a midnight session also called upon `all States to refrain from any action which might aggravate the situation in the area` and urged the Secretary-General to `ensure supervision of cease-fire and withdrawal of all armed personnel` In its only reference to the substance of the Kashmir problem the Security Council adopted the following vague passage: [the Security Council] `decides to consider as soon as operative paragraph one of the Council`s [resolution 210 of Sept 6J has been implemented (dealing with cease-fire and withdrawal of all armed personnel), what steps could be taken to assist towards settlement of the ... problem underlying the present conflict and in the meantime calls upon the two Governments to utilise all peaceful means .
to this end.` Correspondent [Meanwhile, as reported by agencies from Lahore,] Indian and Pakistani jet fighters battled in the sun over Lahore this afternoon, watched by thousands of residents of Pakistan`s second largest city. Pakistanis stood shirt-sleeved in the 90-degree heat and cheered as one of the four Indian fighters burst into flames and spiralled earthwards from the clear blue sky, trailing smoke.
It disappeared behind the roof tops in the direction of the rice helds north of the city.
