RAWALPINDI, Oct 20: Following Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan`s directives to the Islamabad police to cleanse the department of personnel involved in corruption, two fresh incidents of extortion by policemen have come to light.
According to a police source, a Community Police Office (CPO) was established by the former inspector general of police (IGP),Wajid Durrani, at the old Aabpara bus bay to facilitate victims of crime.
However, he said the community office was now being occupied illegally by a fruit chat vendor and others.
He added that some police personnel and officials of Capital Development Authority (CDA) were facilitating illegal occupation and demanding extortion.
Former IGP Wajid Durrani had been transferred to Karachi and since then, the community office had been inactive. It was finally occupied by fruit chat vendor, the source said.
After the alleged corruption by the police came to light, the Superintendent Police (SP) City Mustansar Feroz on Sunday afternoon launched an investigation into the case.
He summoned the policemen concerned and the CDA officials involved in the corruption, the source said.
He further revealed that the fruit chat vendor of Aahpara market had occupied the two rooms allocated for the community office even though it was painted with the traditional colours used by the police.
The police source said the fruit chat vendor told the SP that he paid a monthly rent to some policemen for using the community office.
The second incident of extortion by police officials occurred last Sunday when the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) caught four policemen who were extorting money from vendors of Sunday Bazaar at gunpoint.
These policemen were then handed over to Assistant Sub Inspector Najeeb Ullah for further legal proceeding, but they were later freed by the ASI after a patch-up.
When the additional inspector general of police (AIG) Dr Azam Taimuri was contacted, he said following the interior minister`s orders, a list of policemen having links with terrorists or criminals had already been prepared.
He added that a high powered committee had also been formed to scrutinise policemen involved in illegal activities.
He maintained that the outcome of the inquiry in the fresh cases would be available soon.-Staff Reporter
