MULTAN: More than 16 million home-based women workers are contributing to the economy, and the government should accept them as workers as per labour laws and also ratify the ILO Work Convention 177 immediately.
Speakers said this at a convention of the Homebased Women Workers Federation on Tuesday, held to mark the South Asia Home Work Day.
They asked the government to give the homebased workers the facilities of social security, old age benefit, right to make labor unions and elect collective bargaining agents and all other rights as per the constitution and labour laws.
The convention was presided over by womenworkers` leader Zubeda Awan while Zehra Khan was chief guest.
They said that in the non-formal sector there were a large number of women workers who had been braving exploitation due to gender and economic issues. As these workers are not covered by the labor laws they have to work for more hours and for less wages which greatly affect them and their families.
