12th Dawn in Education Spelling Bee concludes

ISLAMABAD: The 12th Dawn in Education Spelling Bee Competition featuring over 1,600 contestants concluded on Thursday.

The contestants on the final day of this year`s competition were from the 15 to 17 years age group. Mayer`s College Chakwal`s Farrah Jabeen Ashraf was adjudged the winner of the spelling bee in this age group.

She was followed by first runner up Areeba Uzair and second runner up Fatima Karim Kundi, both of EMS Girls High School.

The final competition was judged by Shama Nawaz, Shaheera Moin, Shaza Tehseen and Fauzeih Merchant, with Azka Khan as the pronouncer.

In the four day spellingbee, 185 schools and 1,600 students from the north region contested. The participants were divided into three age groups 9 to 11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 17 years. The participating students praised the event as platform for improving vocabulary and conhdence. They said that participation in such events give them also a chance to face a large audience.

Participants were given 40 seconds on the clock to spell a word asked by the pronouncer, and they could ask for the word to be repeated or for its definition during the first 20 seconds.

The first ever spelling bee was conducted in 2005, as part of the Dawn in Education programme. The event aims to help students improve their spelling and expand theirvocabulary.bee, 185 schools and 1,600 students from the north region contested.
