Sir Syed`s relevance invoked

GUJRAT: The University of Gujrat organised a seminar at its Hafiz Hayat Campus on Wednesday to pay tribute to Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, one of the greatest political scholars and rationalists in the history of the Indian subcontinent.

The participants agreed that the revival of his teachings would boost the efforts for the uplift of the nation.

The seminar titled `Pakistan`s current problems and their solutions in the light of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan`s teachings` was presided over by dean faculty of social sciences Dr Fauzia Maqsood, with UoG director media Sheikh Abdul Rashid as the keynote speaker and head of department of history and Pakistan studies Prof. Dr Javed Haider Syed in the host`s chair.

`Sir Syed devoted all his life for the uplift of the Muslims of the subcontinent. Even today, his teachings and ideas are a beacon of light for us as we go about looking for the solutions to our country`s various social, economic, educational and political problems,` Sheikh Rashid said.

Dr Fauzia Maqsood stressed the need for providing better learning environment and facilities to younger generation to help them develop better understanding and intellectual outlook of life.

`Sir Syed`s all-encompassing modernist approach will not only be an effective tool in curbing violence and eliminating intolerance in our society but also can push us closer to most of our national goals,` she said.

Prof. Dr Javed Haider Syed said Sir Syed championed the cause of a modern society through his pragmatic and rational ideas. `He wanted to build a society where all people enjoyed equal rights. Sir Syed`s thoughts and ideas can act as a panacea to various ills afflicting our society,` Dr Javed said.

Chairperson department of political science and international relations Dr Muhammad Mushtaq threw light on Sir Syed`s struggle and achievements for the political uplift of the Muslims. Correspondent
