I WAS born in Karachi in a building located near Jubilee Cinema which has now been demolished. I remember the roads being washed every night. I remember playing down the lane with my neighbours. I remember having haleem from a street vendor just opposite our apartment. The neighbourhood, the place, the city, the cleanliness were all amazingly good.
Recently, I visited the place to revive my childhood memories, but was astonished to see how blatantly the encroachment mafia, in a nexus with the owner of the building, has blocked the entrance just to create hardship to the residents. The idea is to force them to leave the area and move to some other place so that they may build a new `residential complex` there.
The relevant authorities should get the footpath cleared of encroachments so that the residents of the said building may have a safe and secure passage.
