The high-profile event was a great moment for Pakistan in terms of diplomatic and economic relations. As such, hosting the important summit providedPakistan a chance toincrease its statusinternationally.

However, it is fair to say that Pakistan confronts a significant diplomatic challenge within the SCO owing to the presence of India. While the SCO presents a platform for dialogue between the twonuclear-armed neighbours, meaningful progressin bilateralissuesis unlikely.

While Pakistan will hold its head high for having been a gracious host, absolute returns in the short term are unlikely.

That is disappointing for the residents of Islamabad who had their daily routines disrupted, with roads blocked, businesses stalled, and a heightened security presence.
