L AHORE: Punjab government is working to ensure an interim arrangement for setting up provincial and district public safety commissions in the absence of elected local government representatives, who are integralto these panels.

A meeting of the Law Reforms and Delegated Legislation Committee held on Friday under the chair of Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan discussed key legislative developments, including the establishment of the provincial public safety commission and procedural reforms concerning the referral of finance bills to standing committees.

The law secretary and additional advocate-general briefed the committee on the progress made toward establishing the provincial public safety commission in compliance with the Police Order 2002.

It was conveyed that the home department has initiated a summary for the chief minister`s approval, reaching two key conclusions the provincial commission will be set up upon approval of the summary and district commissions will be established following necessary amendments to the Police Order.

The speaker directed the secretary to place the requisite amendments to the Police Order before the next assembly session.

On the finance and money bills issue, he said that constitutional provisions do not prohibit such a referral and the restriction under the assembly`s Rules of Procedure could be reconsidered with careful deliberation. Staff Reporter
