KARACHl: An alleged bandit, who had been caught by people `red-handed` in Orangi Town and was severely beaten, died in a police lock-up on Tuesday, officials said.
They added that area people caught 27-year-old Faisal during an alleged robbery attempt in Sector 11 ½ and handed him over to police in the early hours of Tuesday morning after beating him.
`The people said they overpowered Faisal but his accomplice escaped on a motorcycle after a failed robbery attempt at a house of a person named Arbab Ali,` said inspector Imtiaz Meer Jat, the SHO of the Pakistan Bazaar police station.
`People beat him badly. The police were called by someone in the area but by the time we reached there he had fainted.
The Pakistan Bazaar SHO said that the police controlled the mob which was highly charged and kept the suspect inside the police station until the crowd dispersed and were about to move him to hospital. `But by the time we were managing things and calling an ambulance, he died from his injuries. The body has been taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities,` he added.
