University students protest power suspension

HARIPUR: Students of University of Haripur (UoH) blocked the HaripurHattar road and the main GT road to protest power supply suspension to their private hostel and non-registration of an FIR against a motorist who allegedly ran over and left injured four of their fellow students.

Police and university sources said that the power transformer in the locality of a couple of private hostels near the University of Haripur had developed a fault two days back but, according to the students, the Pesco authorities used delaying tactics affecting their studies as the semester exams were under way.

The students on Thursday evening first blocked the Haripur-Hattar Road at the point of link Road near UoH and later they moved to the main GT Road near Darwesh, suspending the flow of traffic on both the arteriesforabout an hour.

During the protest, according to students, a car driver in a bid to forcibly wade through the protesting crowd allegedly ran over four students leaving them injured.

The protesters later dispersed peacefully on the intervention of local police. But they again blocked the road leading to the UoH at a couple of points and chanted slogans against the Pesco and the local police.

Meanwhile the office of UoH`s registrar, through a notification declared all the papers due for Friday, June 20, as cancelled and authorised the departmental heads to conduct the papers the very next day to the nnal paper that was scheduled for Monday.
