MIRPURKHAS: A man detained by police on his son’s complaint that he subjected routinely his wife and children to violence died in lock-up at Mirpurkhas taluka police station on Saturday. Police officials claimed the victim had committed suicide but the family accused police of torturing him to death.

Police had detained Dharshi Kolhi in a locality near Abideen filling station on Mirwah Road a day ago on his son’s complaint that he routinely subjected his family members to violence.

On Saturday, the detainee, who was also an addict, committed suicide in the lock-up by hanging himself as he was visibly in severe shock over the son’s complaint against him, police claimed.

Police did not allow journalists to check the victim’s body for any signs of torture, while members of the bereaved family and relatives gathered at the police station accused police of subjecting him to severe beating which led to his death.

Mirpurkhas SSP also insisted the detainee had committed suicide.

Sources said that the body was later handed over to the heirs on their request in the presence of a magistrate but without fulfilling legal formalities.
