Rain brings temporary relief from mugginess

LAHORE: A spell of moderate rain, accompanied by cool breeze, turned weather pleasant in different parts of the city for a short span of time on Sunday.

The mercury level also went considerably down as the 4th monsoon spell began in Punjab.

The areas where rain was reported included Lakshmi Chowk, Shimla Pahari, Davies Road, The Mall, Garhi Shahu, Gulshan-e-Ravi, Qurtaba Chowk, Old Anarkali, Jail Road, Gulberg and Mughalpura, while Faisal Town, Wapda Town, Akbar Chowk, Johar Town and Township received drizzle.

Following the rain, roads and streets in different areas of provincial capital were inundated, causing difficulties for motorists, motorcyclists and other commuters.

The rain also caused disruption of electricity in parts of the city as 60 feeders of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) tripped.

The electricity was sus-pended in areas including Saggiyan, Sanda, Davies Road, old and new Anarkali, Mozang, Defence, Wasanpura, Samanabad, Mahmood Booti and Nisbat Road.

As per the Met Office, the monsoon rainfall is expected across Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Multan, D.G Khan, Bahawalpur, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sahiwal and Gujrat.

According to a Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) spokesperson, monsoon rains have been predicted in Punjab from July 22 to 25.

PDMA says that on July 23 and 24, most of the districts of south Punjab are likely to experience wind and thundershowers.

Monsoon rains are expected in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sahiwal and Gujarat divisions, it says.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia says that a weather alert has been issued for the concerned administrations.
