KASUR: Police claim that a robbery suspect was injured on Monday by his own accomplices, who attacked a police party in a bid to snatch him, in the limits of Pattoki Saddar police station.

According to police, they arrested a suspect, Nasir, an alleged member of an inter-district gang, wanted by police in over 28 cases of robbery and house dacoities.

The suspect, according to police, was also a proclaimed offender in six cases.

The police say they were taking Nasir for recovery in a case, when four unidentified gunmen attacked them near the railway level-crossing to free the suspect. The police retaliated in self-defence.

In the ensuing crossfire, Nasir got injured after being allegedly hit by a bullet fired by his own accomplices, the police claimed.

Police shifted theinjured suspect to Pattoki Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for treatment and lodged a case against his accomplices.

However, none of the policemen was injured during the crossfire between the robbers and police.

PROTEST: A fruit vendor set his own cart on fire on Ferozepur Road in protest against alleged extortion by the officials of Mustafabad Municipal Committee (MC) on Monday.

Later, other vendors also joined the protest, blocking the main road for traffic by parking their carts there.

The vendors raised slogans against the MC officials and demanded an inquiry against the `corrupt` elements who exploit them routinely.

As per local sources, vendors have set up their fruit stalls and carts encroaching upon the road illegally, providing an opportunity to MC officials to extort money and fruits from them.
