THERE is a mass movement of cattle from rural areas to urban centres for Eidul Azha.
Small herds of goats and cows can be seen all over the city being fed and sold from narrow platforms and roadsides. Seeing the increasing number of such `markets` at different junctions in the city, more people have got into the act.
Besides dangerous affects on human health, these markets are a cause of traffic jams and sanitation issues. People visit these markets because they are a lot cheaper than the authorised cattle markets.
They do not think how it can af fect human health. Unhealthy animals may not be fit for slaughtering and that they might be carrying various diseases such as Congo virus. It also becomes difficult to keep children away from the animals.
The authorities should ensure that all sacrificial animal markets are established outside residential zones.
