Moot opposes six canals project

By Our Staff Correspondent 2024-10-22
HYDERABAD: Levelling an allegation that six new canals` project of Punjab is collusion between the federal and PPP governments, speakers at a `water conference` stressed for prolonged struggle against the plan.

Held at the local press club the other day, the conference was organised by the Jeay Sindh Q aumi Party (JSQP).

Addressing the moot, JSQP leader Nawaz Khan Zaunr said that Punjab`s dacoity over Sindh`s water share continued to date for a long time. He said the purpose of those six canals was to render Sindh barren and make Punjab prosperous.

He alleged that the PPP was equally involved in that conspiracy along with Punjab, although the Peoples Party was claiming it had rejected the canals.

He urged people to come forward and save Indus river.

Jeay Sindh Mahaz (Riaz) chairman Riaz Ali Chandio said the PPP had always been partner in crime with Punjab, although it sought vote from Sindhis. He accused the Peoples Party of always bargaining over Sindh`s rights and alleged that right from Z. A. Bhutto to Bilawal Bhutto, who was paternal grandson of Hakim Zardari and maternal grandson of Z. A. Bhutto, had sold Sindh.

He said Punjab was not ready to listen to the language of rationale and it had resorted to intimidation, therefore all Sindh-friendly parties should collectively raise voice from a unified platform.

He said that Punjab never implemented any pact on water. Those six canals were in fact death warrant of 60 million people of Sindh while 13 million people of Punjab would prosper at that cost.

Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (Bashir) leader Dr Niaz Kalani said Indus river was a symbol of Sindh`s existence and Punjab had always planned projects of dams and canals over it to destroy Sindh under a conspiracy.

He said the people of Sindh would not accept any canal or dam over Indus. He said Punjab`s plans were defeated earlier as well and they would be defeated again.

Sindh United Party Roshan Buriro vowed to resist those projects of Punjab and added that the PPP, which had always struck deals over Sindh`s rights, would not be allowed to bargain over Sindh`s water rights. He said those projects would have to be shelved.

Jeay Sindh Tehrik leader Sooriah Sindhi said Indus river water flows were blocked after building of Tarbela and Mangla dams. He said the tail end users had the first right over the use of water, but Punjab had usurped the water of Sindh.

He informed that Egypt`s Nile passed through multiple states to reach Egypt, but no dam was built on it.
