KARACHI: A young prayer leader was shot dead in an Orangi Town area by armed muggers over resistance late on Sunday night, police said on Monday.

Manghopir SHO Haji Sanaullah said that Hafeezullah, 30, was feeling not well and he had gone to a clinic in Gulshan-i-Tauheed to see a doctor. He was waiting for his turn when armed muggers on a motorcycle emerged there, held them at gunpoint and demanded cash from the doctor.

He said they snatched Rs1,200 from the doctor and demanded cash and other valuables from Hafeezullah who told them that he got nothing and tried to run. The robbers opened fire on him and fled. He sustained a single bullet wound in the chest and died on the spot, the area SHO added.

The SHO said the victim was the prayer leader of Bilal Masjid in the same area. He also taught Quran to children there.
