LAHORE, Feb 22: In a private sale deal, four-year-old thoroughbred Pakistani colt Denzaro has been bought by a Rawalpindi race-horse-owner, Gul Zareen Khan, for the record price of rupees two million.
The son of Assassi out of Sun Stroke, Denzaro has performed well at the Racecourse recently during which he won four races, three in-a-row.
His winning streak includes the Derby Trials 2013 in which he lengthened away from the second placed filly Quos-e-Qaza on Sunday last.
A prominent Lahore owner, Mahmood Khan, told Dawn that prior to his Derby Trial triumph, a Karachi owner, Abdul Rahim had offered Rs1.7 million to colt`s breeder Mirza Khurshid Baig for an outright sale, which was not accepted.
A day after colt`s Derby Trials win, Gul Zareen Khan, who has an appetite for Pakistan Derby victory purchased the colt increasing the offer by Rs300,000 over Rahim`s.
A super star in the making, Denzaro, is the half brother of legendry colt Assassin (Assassi-AbouZouz Park) also bred at the Baig Stud Farm.Assassin registered eight straight wins in an unblemished record streak before he went lame during a race in Karachi when ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman.
Assassin too was bought by Gul Zareen Khan a few weeks before his Pakistan Derby run last year.
If Denzaro wins the Pakistan Derby on March 3, surely it would be a good bargain for the Derby-hungry Khan to register second successive Derby win, a rare feat achieved in the Pakistan Derby history.
The colt is now being trimmed by well-known trainer, Abdul Rasheed, who will be eyeing for the second Derby triumph.
Jockey Aamir Pervez will be the probable jockey to ride the colt in the top classic race of the Lahore`s racing calendar.
Within a couple of years the Baig Stud has achieved a big success with its bred colts and fillies being much in demand fetching attractive prices on their sale.
Baig`s top sire, Assassi is from the famous bloodline of Danzig-Northern Dancer-Nearctic, at present rated high keeping in view colts and fillies run record.
