NAB probes Rs600m power theft

MULTAN: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has initiated a probe into alleged electricity theft of more than Rs600 million by officials of the Multan Electric and Power Company (Mepco).

According to an of ficial handout issued here on Wednesday, the NAB Multan Complaint Board had authorised complaint verification against Javed Iqbal Wains (EXEN), Akram Bhatti (superintending engineer) and Javed Niaz, a private person and front man, for causing a loss of Rs625 million to the exchequer in connivance and collusion with each other.

It stated that a complaint was received at the NAB Multan stating Mr Wains, Mr Bhatti and Mr Niaz are collectively involvedinorganisedtheft of power (electricity), illegal huge revision of electricity bills, tampering commercial, private and industrial electric meters of various Benamidars,illegal transfer and postings by seeking bribes.

It stated that the complaint additionally pointed out details of Benami properties worth over Rs100 million.

`It is also learnt that an inquiry was ordered by Secretary Water and Power but no result was achieved rather it was dumped and the alleged persons are roaming free.

Another complaint on similar allegations is also in process against aforementioned alleged public office holders and private person,` it said.

NAB Multan Director General retired brigadier Nasir Awan said the bureau was strictly f ollowing the policy of zero tolerance against corruption.

He said the case would be investigated and finalised on merit.

A three-member committee headed by Federal Complaint Cell Director Syed Saleem Ahmad in its findings on Nov 28 said violation of monthly adjustment was found and average assessment of adjustments up to October 2016 was Rs642 million in the Cantt Division alone.illegal transfer and postings by seeking bribes.
