A pathetic zoo

2025-04-23
THIS is with reference to the article `A case for Rano` (April 4). Each and every word about the plight of innocent cub and other animals at the hands of ignorant zookeepers was saddening. I felt as if I had been deprived, mercilessly, of my own natural surroundings and thrown down acemented pit, or put in a dingy cage behind rusted iron bars.

It also reminded me of stinking atmosphere across the zoo which I had personally encountered a couple of years ago when I had taken my granddaughters there. Seeing the chained dusty elephant, tired lions, lifeless cheetahs and a lonely chimp was all very disappointing.

The worst was the condition of tortoises; given a dirty mud water pool to swim in, surrounded by tall palm trees from where the birds, while easing themselves, tainted the tough back-shells of all the tortoises, giving them a pitiful look.

The provincial government and the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) should improve the conditions inside the zoo to make it a somewhat comfortable place for the animals, and an attractive hangout for the people of the metropolis.
