Akbar and carpets!

2021-05-23
T HIS refers to the article `Things we forgot we could make` (May 16) according to which Emperor `Akbar established the carpet-weaving tradition in India in 1520, when he brought carpet weavers from Persia to his palace in Agra and, later, when he established his court in Lahore`.

The assertion is rather strange. How come Akbar established the craft of weaving or established his court in 1520 when he was not even born at the time? His birth (1542) was still a good 22 years away! The f act is that even Akbar`s grandfather and the founder of the Mughal Empire, Babur, came to the subcontinent and established his rule only in 1526 when he defeated Sultan Ibrahim Lodhi in the first battle of Panipat.
