I FIND it strange that some English newspapers refer to the Prime Minister`s wife as the `First Lady`, and a number of TV channels call her Khatoon-i-Awwal, which is the Urdu equivalent of the title. It is actually the wife of the President, the head of the state, in this case Mrs Arif Alvi, who deserves to be accorded the title.
Only in countries, like the United States, where the head of the government is also the head of the state, the wife of the head of the government is called the First Lady.
