KARACHI: A large Pakistan flag, to be flown at the Wagah border on Youm-iTakbeer, was given finishing touches on the lush grounds of Jheel Park in PECHS on Thursday.

Most of the white and green sections of the 80 by 120-foot flag had already been stitched together at the VIP Flags factory in the Korangi Industrial Area. However, the star and crescent were manually stitched onto the flag at the park using neat applique work.

Sheikh Nisar Ahmed Parchumwala, the owner of VIP Flags, explained that in order to attach the star and crescent, the entire flag needed to be spread out on open ground so they could be placed accurately.

`We always take care to make a flag according to its correct proportions and colours,` he told Dawn.The flag is made of polyester material. VIP Flags and Mr Parchumwala also hold a world record for creating the largest flag measuring 540 by 320 feet in 2004. That flag was so massive that it covered the entire National Stadium ground. It was later cut into smaller pieces, each the size of a bed sheet, and sent to the Northern Areas during the 2005 earthquake for the affectees to cover themselves with.

The flag currently being hoisted and flown every morning by the Pakistan Rangers at Wagah is also a product of VIP Flags.

The idea of making another large flag this year came to Mr Parchumwala following the Pakistani nation`s proud moment of overcoming its enemy with a resounding reply to their uncalledfor attack.

The new flag will be hoisted on a 410-feethigh pole on Youm-i-Takbeer, May 28, which will make it clearly visible for all from across the border, too.
