Man attacked for resisting vani

MUZAFFARGARH: Police have registered a case against more than 50 people who allegedly injured a man and locked his house for refusing to allow his daughter to be married as vani.

The mob threatened the family with dire consequences and locked them up at their house in Shah Jamal about 35 kilometres from the city.

A girl allegedly eloped with `R` and they tied the knot. The girl`s father, Ghulam Fareed, complained to police about abduction of his daughterand also knocked on the door of a panchayat (village jury). The jury led by Malik Shafi listened to the two parties and asked Ghulam Shabbir, brotherin-law of `R`, to give his nine-year-old daughter as Vani but Shabbir refused to do so.

More than 50 people attacked and injured Shabbir at his tea shop and later stormed his house and locked up the family.

SP Investigation Saifullah Khattak said police had registered a case and arrested two of the suspects. Raids were being conducted to arrest others, he said.

Shah Jamal police registered a case under sections 506 and 310A. Correspondent
