PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf chairman Imran Khan met officials of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Tuesday to dispel the impression that the provincial Ehtesab Commission is out to get them.
`Bureaucracy should not fear. We will protect them with a checl< and balance system. We would go after the corrupt only,` the PTI chief told a news conference at the Chief Minister`s House after holding meetings with the government officials and ministers.
Imran Khan said there was an impression that officials and ministers were reluctant to sign government documents fearing accountability.
He said the chief secretary had been informed that officials should not fear anything as the Ehtesab commission would be going after only those, who were corrupt.
`Accountability body in the province is not in government control and the process of accountability is going to accelerate,` he said.
After insisting he was in town to meet those injured in the Sept 18 Badhaber Airbase terrorist attack, the PTI chief shared his sense of pride at the `good performance` of the provincial model police and Ehtesab commission.
He said he was happy at the establishment of fair Ehtesab commission in the province.
Imran Khan rejected the allegations of PTI former minister Ziaullah Afridi against other cabinet members and Chief Minister Pervez Khattak.
Ziaullah has been imprisoned in corruption cases since July this year.
Imran Khan said instead of hurling allegations at others, Ziaullah should have cleared himself of charges against him.`What Ziaullah Afridi did was blackmail and not a defence so he was expelled from the party,` he said.
The PTI chief expressed pride in est ablishing a model police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which, he said, had been depoliticised unlike Punjab police.
When asked about change in the provincial traffic police`s uniform and Peshawar`s chaotic traffic, he gave a long explanation of how the PML-N-led federal government was a hurdle to the PTI`s government plan of starting a mass transit system in the province for two years.
Imran Khan insisted hurdles were being created by the federal government in the way of PTI provincial government to prove it a failure.
He said he took pride in holding local government elections in the province and devolving power to the grassroots level.
The PTI chief said his party would ensure that merit is followed in the local government`s fund allocation, appointments and other affairs.
He said for the first time, Rs43 billion would be allocated for district governments in the province.
Imran Khan expressed disappointment with the two PTI MPAs , 55 councillors and a senator for violating party discipline during the recent local government elections saying the violation of discipline made the party lose elections in some union councils.
He said on the advice of his wife Reham Khan, he had approved a Rs2 billion project to accommodate and educate street children in the province.
The PTI chief later met the Peshawar cricket team players, who won T-20 Champion Trophy for the second time lately.
He said it was unfortunate that the province didn`t have many playgrounds but even then, local boys played good cricket.
Imran Khan said he and sports and youth affairs secretary had come up with a plan to increase the number of playgrounds in the province to encourage sports.
