Demos continue against moves to hand over hospitals to NGOs

LARKANA: Rejecting the Sindh government`s decision of handing over health facilities to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), protests were held in Larkana and Khairpur by paramedics and the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Tuesday.

The PMA-Larkana chapter and the Pakistan Paramedical Staff Association (PMSA) demonstrated at the JinnahbaghLARKANA: Rejecting the Sindh government`s decision of handing over health facilities to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), protests were held in Larkana and Khairpur by paramedics and the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Tuesday.

The PMA-Larkana chapter and the Pakistan Paramedical Staff Association (PMSA) demonstrated at the Jinnahbaghchowk after taking out the procession from the district health ofhce on the call of the PMSA-Central. Siraj Umrani and Yunis Jalbani of the PMSA and PMA general secretary Dr Ikram Tunio led the procession.

Carrying banners and placards, and chanting slogans against ceding over the administrative control of 219 health facilities in different categories to NGOs, they assembled at Jinnahbagh chowk.

Raising slogans such as `No to the Decision`, the leaders said they wouldoppose the decision. According to them, it was against the constitution which guaranteed job protection. They threatened to hospital shutdowns if the government did not reverse the decision.

They appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan to take notice of what they said was injustice being meted out to the employees.

KHAIRPUR: Office-bearers and members of the Sindh Paramedical Staff Welfare Association took out a rally from the office of the district health officer to thelocal press club.

Addressing the protesters, the leaders said it was an illegal and unconstitutional act. It was quite disheartening and saddening to know that the hospitals of district Khairpur were being given in the administrative control of NGOs.

The act would create hardships for the employees of hospitals, they added.

They appealed to the Sindh CM, health minister, health secretary and other authorities concerned to withdraw the decision.
