A UNICEF report has stated that Pakistan is the riskiest country for newborn.
According to the report, 46 out of every 1,000 infants die in the first month after birth. More than 80 per cent of these mortalities are caused owing to premature birth, complications during labour and delivery, andinfections like sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia.
The report goes on to state that basic solutions like affordable quality health care delivered by trained doctors, nurses, antenatal and postnatal nutrition for mother and infant and clean water can reduce the mortality rate by as much as three fourths.
The government should take immediate measures to reduce infant mortality throughincreased spending onprenatal and ante natal health. This will go a long way in improving overall health facilities in the country.
