THE recent recruitment process by the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) for the post of municipal and accounts officers left many meritorious candidates disheartened. The candidates were asked absurd questions in the interview, such as the number of siblings and father`s profession. On the basis of such questions they were rejected. Unbelievable, right? Only a handful of the many meritorious candidates were selected, and that, too, as a shield to cover the flaws of the entire recruitment process.
The aggrieved candidates gave voice to the resentment over the social media, but some SPSC employees used fake identities to make fun of the protesting candidates.Thefact thatfakeidentities were used was established by the data such accounts shared on the social media.
Such bits of data could only be accessed bythe SPSC,and thatexposedthe poorly managed propaganda.
The SPSC is the only institution that has been goven the mandate for conducting the recruitment process for officers and bureaucrats. If it becomes a wholesale outlet from where the elite may `buy` what they want, then where would the poor, deserving and meritorious candidates go? The SPSC would do well to refrain from indulging in nepotism. It should instead focus on promoting meritocracy.
