Brick kiln workers protest against low wages

TOBA TEK SINGH: Scores of brick kiln workers staged a protest demonstration in front of the press club at Kamalia on Thursday over the refusal of kiln owners to pay their wages according to the agreement between the workers and owners two months ago.

They were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against kiln owners and the labour department (LWD).

Addressing the protesters, Labour QaumiMovementKamalia tehsil president Malik Abdul Majeed claimed that according to the agreement between the kiln owners and workers, the former would pay Rs1,200 per 1,000 bricksto the latter but did not implement the decision. He lamented that the labour department officials were not cooperating with the workers as it was not taking action against the owners.

FLOUR: The citizens staged a protest demonstration and blocked the traffic on the Jhang Road near Sadhar Chowk, Faisalabad to condemn the price hike of flour.

They were chanting slogans against the government for its failure to control the flour rate. They demanded the government provide subsidised flour after supplying wheat on reduced price to the flour mills instead of providing free flour bags at the fixed points as white-collar class was forced to purchase flour from grocery shops at higher price.ARFA KARIM: On the Pakistan Day, the prize distribution ceremony of `Arfa Karim Talent Award` was organised by the district education authority at the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Auditorium, Faisalabad.

Deputy Commissioner Ali Annan Qamar was the chief guest.

In the Arfa Karim Talent Award, the Govt MC Higher Secondary School, Allama Iqbal Road won the first position in the writing and quiz competitions among the science students with the cash award of Rs320,000.

The Government Girls High School remained the runner-up, winning the cash prize of Rs180,000. In this contest, students of more than 500 schools participated.
