TORONTO: Canada is set to hold a snap federal election on April 28, as newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks a robust mandate to navigate escalating tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump.

Carney, who assumed office on March 14 following Justin Trudeau`s resignation, announced on Sunday his intention to dissolve Parliament after consulting with GovernorGeneral Mary Simon.

The decision comes six months ahead of the scheduled Oct 20 election, aiming to capitalise on a surge in nationalistic sentimentspurred by recent US actions.

`We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump`s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,` Carney said outside Rideau Hall.

`There is so much more to do to secure Canada. To invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada. That`s why Pm asking for a strong positive mandate from my fellow Canadians.

He said, `Canadians deserve leadership that stands firm against foreign intimidation. Our sovereignty and our jobs depend on our resolve. We won`t back down in the face of threats, nor will we sacrifice Canadian values for short-term gains.

Earlier, President Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and made controversial remarks suggesting the annexation of Canada as the 51st US state. The actions not only strained US-Canada diplomatic ties but also ignited a wave of Canadian nationalism.Canadians have responded with boycotts of American products.

Under Carney`s leadership, the Liberal Party has experienced a rebound in popularity, now holding a slight lead over the Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre. Poilievre has criticised Carney`s ties to big corporations and questioned the transparency of his financial dealings. A recent poll shows the Liberals with 40pc support, while the Conservatives have 37pc.

A former central banker with no prior political experience, Carney`s entry into politics has been swift. He will contest the election in the Ottawa-area district of Nepean, with a campaign emphasising the need for strong leadership to protect Canadian sovereignty and address economic challenges posed by US policies.

The trade war initiated by the US has had tangible effects on both economies. However, the US annexation rhetoric has had a unifying effect on Canadians, reinforcing national identity and sovereignty.

Both major parties are expected to centre their campaigns on how best to handle relations with the US. Carney advocates for a firm stance against US aggression, emphasising the protection of Canadian workers and industries. He also hinted at reducing economic reliance on the US by seeking stronger trade partnerships with Europe and Asia.

The Liberals, under Carney, emphasise safeguarding Canadian sovereignty and expanding international trade partnerships to offset US dependence, while the Conservatives, led by Poilievre, champion economic populism, transparency, and scepticism about Carney`s establishment background.

Meanwhile, the New Democratic Party, led by Jagmeet Singh, seeks to stand out by prioritising social justice and workers` protections amid the economic turmoil.
