KARACHI: The city administration on Wednesday arrested 57 profiteers and sent them to jail and fined 490 others for overcharging and selling adulterated edible items, said a statement issued here.

Sharing details, Karachi Commissioner Ejaz Ahmad Khan in the statement said that RsG44,000 was collected in fine imposed on the proñteers and those selling goods of poor quality.

The penalised retailers included fruit sellers, greengrocers, grocers, bakers and sellers of confectionery items, chicken meat sellers, milk sellers, beef sellers and other profiteers in different parts of the metropolis.

The statement said during the past two days a total of 964 profiteers were fined and 92 of them were sent to prison.

The commissioner warned that stringent action would also be taken against street hawkers and shopkeepers who did not prominently display official price lists issued daily by the administration.
