PHILADELPHIA: Manchester City hit Al Ain for six on Sunday to secure a place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup after Real Madrid shrugged off an early red card to beat Mexican side Pachuca 3-1 as the second round of group games at the tournament came to a conclusion.
The match between City and Al Ain in Atlanta was dubbed the `Abu derby`, with the English club`s owner and United Arab Emirates vice-president Sheikh Mansour facing off against his elder sibling, Sheikh Mohamed, president of the Emirati team and also the country.
The Premier League side were far too strong for their opponents under a closed roof at Atlanta`s spectacular Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The result seemed certain from the moment Ilkay Gundogan, who has been linked with a move to Galatasaray, opened the scoring perhaps fortuitously by lobbing the keeper after eight minutes.
Teenager Claudio Echeverri marked his first City start by adding the second from a free-kick and Erling Haaland made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time.
Gundogan finished off a neat move after 73 minutes before two substitutes joined in, with Oscar Bobb rolling in the fifth and Rayan Cherki grabbing his first City goal for 6-0.
The result, in a game watched by a crowd of over 40,000, means both City and Juventus arethrough to the knockout phase after each winning their first two matches in Group `G`.
They will now face each other in Orlando on Thursday to decide who tops the section. Juve go into the clash with a slight edge as goals scored is the second tiebreaker after goaldifference for teams level on points. Juve have scored nine goals to City`s eight.
In the round of 16, the top team in Group `G` will play the secondplaced team in Group `H`, currently Red Bull Salzburg, while the runners-up will face the top team, currently 15-time European champions Real `Now we have to see whether we`ll be first or second in the group,` said City coach Pep Guardiola, who changed his entire starting line-up following the 2-0 opening win against Wydad Casablanca.
`We played a little bit better than the first game, especially in the second half. We pushed and pushed to score another goal to try to finish first, but we missed by one goal. But yeah, we know what we need to do against the Italian team to finish as number one.
Al Ain had only 26% of the possession and managed only one shot on target, sealing their early exit from the competition.
`We spoke a lot before the game about how to maintain our pressure so that we could score the goals that we did,` Guardiola said. `The guys that played today took their opportunity. We are fortunate tohave alotoftalentedplayers that are waiting for their chance.
RACIST INSULT In Charlotte, Real overcame the early sending-off of Raul Asencio to beat Pachuca and get their first win under new coach Xabi Alonso.
Alonso`s side had been held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabian outfit Al Hilal in their opening Group `H` game and were without Kylian Mbappe, who is recovering after being discharged from hospital following acute gastroenteritis.
The Spanish giants were reduced to 10 men in the seventh minute after defender Asencio was shown a straight red card for hauling down Salomon Rondon when the Venezuela international was through on goal.
That left the Liga MX team sensing the chance for an upset in front of 70,248 fans at the home of the NFL`s Carolina Panthers.
However, Real took the lead on 35 minutes when Jude Bellingham buried a left-foot shot into the bottom corner, and Arda Guler doubled the lead with a clinical finish after combining with Gonzalo Garcia before the interval.
Federico Valverde made it 3-0 by volleying home at the far post following Brahim Diaz`s lofted pass with 20 minutes left, before the Mexicans grabbed a late consolation through Elias Montiel`s deflected effort 10 minutes from time.
`We had to defend with oneless player in a low block and in that situation you have to know how to suffer and have the humility to find the right moment, Alonso said.
`We weren`t able to show what we`ve been working on but the defensive line held strong and we had good periods of possession.
We took a lot of positives from the game, especially the three points.
Alonso also said that Real defender Antonio Rudiger had complained of a racist incident at the end of the game when the German was visibly angered following an exchange of words with Pachuca`s Gustavo Cabral.
`I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate, but if it has happened, all measures should be taken and we support Antonio because it`s something unacceptable,` said the coach.
Cabral, the 39-year-old Argentinian centre-back, denied the accusations, saying his words had been misinterpreted.
Real are level at the top of Group `H` on four points with Salzburg, who drew 0-0 with Al Hilal at Audi Field in Washington, DC.
Al Hilal had 58 percent of the total possession but managed only four shots on target while Salzburg had six attempts saved by Morocco international goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Real and Salzburg meet each other next in Philadelphia, while Al Hilal have two points and can still qualify with a win when they play Pachuca, who are now out.-Agencies
