A MODERN state finds its basis primarily in safeguarding the lives of its citizens.
It guarantees life-security among other rights to the citizens. A state cannot function if it fails to protect the lives of its people. In Pakistan, loss ofinnocent lives has become an unfortunate everyday reality.
The recent unfortunate deaths of nine passengers who were travelling from Balochistan to their hometowns in Punjab left the nation numb. The incident raised serious questions over the ability of the state to protect its citizens. The terrorists carried out their shameless, inhuman act in broad daylight, and still managed to flee the scene without any difficulty.
However, the latest incident was no more an anomaly. It has now become afamiliar pattern that reappears every now and then in some part of the country.
In 2025 alone, Balochistan has witnessed bloody episodes multiple times, including the hijacking of Jaffar Express, the killing of coal miners in Dukki, and the murder of people from Punjab.
The state is the guarantor of people`s life. The failure to carry out its duty leaves a spot on the credentials of a functioning state. The state must ensure the fundamental security of life in the country. It has the duty to do so, and it must deliver.
