SOUTH WAZlRISTAN: Armed assailants on Tuesday evening launched an attack on the residence of a prominent tribal elder in Birmal tehsil of Lower South Waziristan district in a bid to abduct a family member, but a swift response from the inmates resulted in a fierce exchange of fire, the police said.

The incident occurred in the Darablai area of Azam Warsak.

District police officer Khan Khel claimed that three attackers were killed on the spot during the gunfire. The accomplices of the deceased managed to flee the scene, taking the bodies with them, he added.

The DPO confirmed that the elder, Sardar Ali Karey Khel Wazir and all members of his family remained safe, and no one in the house sustained any injuries. He said that an investigation had been launched, and efforts were underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

Local tribal circles described Sardar Ali Wazir as a respected, influential, and fearless tribal leader, known for his strong character and commitment to community welfare.
