KARACHI: Progressive writer and rights activist Rahat Saeed passed away on Wednesday after a protracted illness.

He was 83.

His funeral prayers were held as Masjid Yasrab in DHA. He was laid to rest at a graveyard near Tariq Road.

Mr Saeed was among the founding members of Irtiqa magazine, which started in February 1989. He continued writing its editorials and had also played a pivotal role in founding the Irtiga Institute of Social Sciences, where he served as an executive member until his last days.

He was also the chief organiser of the Anjuman Taraqi-pasandMusanafeen.

His close associate Huma Baig, also a progressive writer, told Dawn Mr Saeed worked for the marginalised and oppressed as he remained part of different trade unions and played an important role in the fight for the rights of workers.

In a statement, the Irtiga Institute of Social Sciences expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr Saeed and acknowledged his rich legacy and visionfor ajust society.

It said Mr Saeed`s presence in the founding and editorial boards of the Irtiga`s magazine and institute was instrumental in shaping their collective progressive vision.
