ISLAMABAD: After bringing a new legal team to represent the party in the Panama Papers case in the Supreme Court, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has started restructuring its media team.
Fawad Chaudhry, who joined the PTI in June and contested the by-election for a National Assembly seat from Jhelum, has been made the party`s new spokesperson, according to a notification issued by PTI secretary general Jahangir Tareen on Wednesday.
Talking to Dawn, Mr Chaudhry said he had been given the responsibility to represent the party at various media forums, whereas information secretary Naeemul Haq would also continue to work on his position.
He said he had been appointed as the spokesperson because the party leadership believed that it was getting dif ficult for one person to look after the media issues, which were increasing with the passage of time with the addition of new TV channels and publications.
Mr Chaudhry, who had also served as media adviser to PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for some time and acted as spokesman for the then prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, said he would make every effort to come up to the expectations of the PTI leadership.
PTI chairman Imran Khan recently formed a new four-member legal teamafter Hamid Khan`s decision to leave the case amid criticism that he had failed to provide credible evidence against the prime minister and his family.
PTI sources said the chairman wanted to see the party`s legal and media team members play an active and aggressive role in highlighting the contradictions in the documents being presented by the Sharif family before the SC.
The sources said that there were restlessness and worries within the party`s ranks over the recent developments in the court hearings of the case and Mr Khan was not satisfied with his legal and media teams.
The sources said that Mr Khan believed that Mr Chaudhry could play a very important role in this regard since he belonged to the legal community and also had the experience of working in TV channels as an anchorperson.
Meanwhile, PTI vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi announced that the party would oppose the 24th Constitution Amendment Bill moved by the government in parliament. The bill seeks the right to appeal in suo motu cases heard by the superior judiciary.
Mr Qureshi said the party had decided to oppose the move believing that the bill had been introduced with `political and mala fide intentions`.
The party has already announced boycott of the National Assembly sessions, but its senators regularly attend the sessions of the house.
