LONDON: Mr. R.H.S. Crossman, Member of Parliament for Coventry East, referring to labour amendment on foreign policy in the House of Commons, told a meeting here yesterday [Nov 22] that it was not disloyalty to the Government which had made over 100 Labour members of Parliament abstain last Monday.
`Every one of us knows that Mr. Bevin`s policy is preferable to anything Mr. Churchill would have done,` he said. ... Saying that if arrangements to pool arms with America developed with no corresponding agreement with Russia to balance it, the British Isles would become an American aircraft carrier off the coast of Europe, Mr. Crossman declared: `It was right to check Russian expansionist tendencies in Eastern Europe and in Iran. But we must also stand up against American economic imperialism in the Far East. What is Japan today but an American colony? It is socialist Britain`s task to speak for the peoples of the world against imperialism, whether it comes from ... America or Russia. We cannot consent to the American interpretation of `free trade` which permits America to export her unemployment to dominate world markets to the detriment of other countries and to use loans as a means of pressure.` Dawn Delhi
