A GOOD MOVE: This refers to the letter `CSS screening is wrong` (Nov 6).
The purpose ofthe screeningtestis to weed out the non-serious candidates and reduce the burden on the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC). While it has caused concern regarding its fairness, the distribution of marks across the subjects in the test is fair, making it more than possible for meritorious candidates to qualify it without relying on rote-learning.
Notwithstanding the cynical reception of the sudden announcement, this might just prove to be a pragmatic approach towards an otherwise hectic process.
Faraz Hussain Larkana DOUBLE TAXATION: I would like to draw the attention towards the issue of double taxation beingfaced at the Point of Sale (POS). The revenue-collection mechanism in the shape of POS has raised the prices of all items by 12-17 per cent. Despite the fact that sales tax is available as input adjustment to the retailstores, additionalcharges over and above the tagged price is being charged. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), wanting additional revenues, is turning a blind eye to the matter.
Muhammad Adil Khan Haripur SOCIAL CURSE: Dowry is a curse that still haunts the country despite the disdain attached to it. The parents` desire to protect their daughters from being disgraced compels them to commit this abominable act which is an utter exploitation of their helplessness. Every wedding invitation must carry `say no to dowry` statement to keep the matter alive and encourage people to move away from this social curse.
Uzair Zaheer Muzaffarabad DISPARATE LAW: While the judiciary has ordered the demolition of several structures, it has allowed certain others to be regularised against the payment of fine. The cases are of similar nature, but have attracted divergent verdicts. One wonders why it hashappenedthe wayithashappened.
