Khunjerab border
2025-01-25
THERE have been efforts to keep the Khunjerab border open round the year.
To address the challenges posed by harsh weather conditions, the government has implemented measures, such as snow clearance and road maintenance, but a lot more needs to be done to improve the infrastructure and facilities.
The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) maintains the road on the Pakistani side.
Although it does a decent job, there has often been criticism related to inadequate machinery and mechanisms. The Khunjerab Security Force (KSF) and other departments stationed at the border also need to be taken into the loop to improve efficiency at the border.
In contrast, the Chinese government has invested heavily in maintaining the road on its side with the help of modern equipment and technology to ensure a safe and smooth passage. The Chinese authorities have also provided adequate facilities to their personnel, including heating and coal during the harsh winter months.
To make the Khunjerab border crossing more efficient and secure, the Pakistani side should invest in modern snow clearance equipment, improve the road network, and provide better facilities to the staff, like heating, transportation, warm clothes, and modern technology.
With these and other such measures, the government can enhance the overall experience of Khunjerab crossing, making it more efficient, secure and welcoming for traders and tourists alike.
