IT seems the bloated and corrupt state machinery keeps inventing new ways to harass citizens.Theirlatest toolis stopping cars at random to check if the motor vehicle tax has been paid.
Recently, I was stopped twice inside 30 minutes while driving to run important time-bound errands. What was worse, the policemen were `collecting` their catch in a bunch, leaving the tax-paying public to wait as there were only two people who were trained enough to check the papers.
The rest were busy `collecting` more in the net.
There is a much simpler way now that the Punjab government has been using technology for a while. If the authorities see unpaid charges, they can just issue a warning notice at known addresses and/or phones. In case of default, a hefty fine, followed by even physical confiscation of the vehicle, should be enough to discourage the tax dodgers.
This may also reduce the massive and completely unne cessary bleeding of resources the state machinery recklessly causes through its antiquated methods.
